Customer Build - Work in Progress

Live-In Comfort Without Sacrificing 4WD Capability

The Bushtech Bush Cabin creates a fully insulated, secure living space on a ute platform — combining the comfort of a compact camper with the capability of a properly prepared 4WD vehicle.

Built in South Africa for some of the world’s harshest environments, Bushtech products are proven globally and already widely used in New Zealand’s backcountry. The Bush Cabin is one of the most refined and well-equipped ute campers in its class while remaining exceptionally strong and ultra-lightweight.

At under 200 kg net of the removed tailgate, the Bush Cabin is exceptionally light for a fully integrated ute camper — yet load-tested to 2.5 tonnes. This remarkable strength-to-weight ratio reflects Bushtech’s world-proven aluminium canopy construction.

The result is a ute camper that retains the durability, balance and driving characteristics needed for long-distance touring, remote 4WD tracks and everyday use.

Ute Camper vs Canopy + Roof Tent

What's the difference?

The key difference between a ute camper and a canopy plus roof-tent setup is gaining genuine internal living space, along with a significant increase in usable volume. The Bush Cabin’s lower cabin section is substantially larger than a conventional canopy, creating a proper interior rather than simply storage.

A canopy and roof-tent setup is fundamentally a live-around solution. Cooking, shelter and day-to-day living take place outside the vehicle, with the sleeping area accessed via an external ladder. While practical in settled weather, comfort and protection are limited when conditions turn cold, wet or windy.

A ute camper such as the Bushtech Bush Cabin provides true live-in capability. Step into a fully enclosed, insulated interior and remain warm, dry and comfortable regardless of conditions — a major advantage for extended travel, shoulder-season trips and winter touring.

The Bush Cabin also removes one of the most common objections people have to roof tents — the ladder. Instead of climbing outside at night, the sleeping area is accessed internally from the cabin. With the option of a portable toilet in the lower cabin, even bathroom trips during the night can be handled without climbing a ladder or stepping outside into cold, wet or windy conditions.

At the same time, the Bush Cabin retains the flexibility many travellers enjoy with canopy and roof-tent setups. In good weather you can still cook, relax and live around the vehicle, while always having the option of retreating inside a warm, enclosed cabin when conditions demand it.

The sleeping area follows a roof-tent style layout but is significantly larger and more refined. Featuring premium double-layer canvas and a 100 mm thick EEZI-AWN luxury mattress, the Bush Cabin provides sleeping comfort far closer to a bed at home than a typical roof-tent setup.

Engineered by Two of South Africa’s Leading Overland Brands

Bushtech Aluminium Canopies

Bushtech produces some of the strongest, lightest and most dust-proof aluminium canopies available, proven on permanently off-road vehicle fleets across Africa and internationally. Their canopies carry dynamic load ratings at least 50% higher than many comparable canopies, while remaining lighter than even plastic or fibreglass canopies.

Each canopy — and now the Bush Cabin — is hand finished to a high OEM standard, combining structural strength with long-term durability and premium fit and finish. The same engineering approach, proven through Bushtech’s 2.5-tonne static load test, carries directly into the Bush Cabin design.

EEZI-AWN

EEZI-AWN is a globally respected overland brand with more than 42 years of dedicated roof-tent engineering. Its tents have been proven across every major continent, in climates ranging from extreme heat to prolonged cold and heavy weather.

As a result, EEZI-AWN products sit in a fundamentally different category of pedigree and performance from roof-tent brands commonly sold in New Zealand, which are typically designed for recreational use rather than sustained expedition travel.

The brand is also known for producing some of the most comfortable mattresses found in roof tents globally. For the Bush Cabin, EEZI-AWN has gone further again, incorporating a class-leading 100 mm thick mattress designed to nearly rival a bed at home for comfort.

Together, these two Johannesburg-based innovators have created a camper system that combines exceptional strength with premium sleeping comfort — introducing a new benchmark in expedition-capable ute campers.

How the Bush Cabin Compares to Other Ute Camper Setups

20260313_134324.jpg

The Bushtech Bush Cabin stands apart from most ute-based campers in seven key ways:

1. Genuine Off-Road Capability

The Bush Cabin is engineered for sustained four-wheel-drive use, not limited to sealed roads or light gravel. While many ute campers claim 4WD capability, the terrain shown in their marketing is often little more than gravel roads or shallow fords easily managed by a standard car.

The XpeditioNZ team has extensive global experience in serious four-wheel-drive travel, with a deep understanding of the remote country a properly prepared 4WD can safely access. The Bush Cabin is one of the few ute campers capable of genuinely reaching New Zealand’s remote backcountry locations, whereas many campers claiming off-road capability are better suited to gravel routes than true 4WD tracks.

On a well-set-up 4WD ute, a Bush Cabin can safely continue into country where other ute campers would be forced to turn back.

2. Exceptional Flexibility in Use

The Bush Cabin uniquely combines live-around and live-in capability. In warm conditions, large gullwing side doors provide open access for roadside stops, cooking or daytime use.

When the weather turns cold or wet, simply step inside and close the cabin to enjoy a fully insulated living space, with the option of a diesel heater for genuine cold-weather comfort.

3. Very Low Overall Weight and Excellent Strength-to-Weight

Constructed from aluminium, the Bush Cabin is significantly lighter than most comparable ute campers. In double-cab configuration it weighs approximately 215 kg, with the effective installed weight reduced significantly further once the vehicle’s tailgate is removed.

This low mass helps preserve vehicle handling, suspension performance and off-road capability while reducing long-term stress on the vehicle during extended travel.

Despite its light weight, the Bush Cabin passes a 2.5-tonne load test, delivering class-leading strength-to-weight performance.

4. Outstanding Insulation

All New Zealand-spec Bush Cabins include Bushtech’s premium thermal foam insulation throughout the aluminium cabin, not just in the tent section, which also uses dual-layer premium canvas. The result is one of the most comprehensively insulated ute campers in its category.

5. Best-in-Class Mattress

The Bush Cabin features a 100 mm thick premium multi-density foam mattress, developed with EEZI-AWN to deliver comfort far beyond typical roof-tent mattresses. The result is sleeping comfort closer to a bed at home than a conventional roof-tent setup.

6. Superior Quality of Construction and Premium Finish

Bushtech’s reputation for aluminium canopy engineering carries directly into the Bush Cabin. Fully braced, internally framed doors minimise flex and deliver exceptional rigidity and dust sealing.

Every Bush Cabin is meticulously hand-finished before coating, resulting in a durable, corrosion-resistant finish and true OEM-level build quality.

7. Excellent Value for Money

The Bush Cabin is one of the most cost-effective ways to create a true live-in camper vehicle. It costs less to build than a tray and canopy plus separate roof tent, while remaining significantly more affordable than motorhomes or most other ute-based camper systems.
