EEZI-AWN Xplor - Biggest Clamshell Hard Shell on Market
This roof tent sits at the top end of the hard-shell market. Designed and built in South Africa by EEZI-AWN, a specialist manufacturer with decades of expedition and overland experience, it delivers a level of construction, materials quality, and real-world climate performance that is rarely seen.
Its design philosophy is rooted in genuine expedition use rather than cost-driven shortcuts. The shell architecture is an original design with fully welded corner construction durability and long-term performance at a surprisingly light weight for a tent of this size.
EEZI-AWN is one of the world’s most established and respected roof-tent manufacturers, with over four decades of dedicated design and engineering behind its products. Developed and built in South Africa and proven across every major continent, EEZI-AWN roof tents are known globally for durability, weather protection, and long-term liveability.
Class-Leading Space and Comfort
Generously sized at 2.3 m long by 1.5 m wide, the Xplor delivers an internal mattress area of 2.2 m × 1.38 m. These dimensions make it exceptionally well suited to taller users or anyone wanting significantly more interior space within a clamshell format.
More than just length and width, the Xplor’s design maximises usable internal volume, creating an open, spacious feel typically associated with larger, bulkier tents. Ideal for couples and potentially suitable for a small family with a child.
Canvas
Dual-layered 260 gsm core-spun poly-cotton canvas, Teflon-treated at the mill. This proven EEZI-AWN canvas system is designed for long-term use across all climates and has a reputation for lasting for the very long term. Dual-layer construction provides the equivalent performance of 520 gsm canvas while improving breathability and longevity. Don't underestimate the superiority of the canvas used on this model - there's little of this quality on the NZ market and it's a defining feature of this tent.
Mattress
80 mm SABS-approved foam mattress for exceptional comfort — significantly thicker than typical hard-shell offerings. Xpeditionz comment - this is the best mattress in our range. Not just 80mm but a very premium quality of foam that's instantly noticeable.
Shell Construction
Insulated for year-round comfort and reduced condensation.
Aerodynamic Profile
Sloped shell improves airflow and load handling, with welded top tracks for mounting solar panels, load bars, or roof racks.
Modular Fly
In calm conditions, the fly can be unzipped, rolled, and stowed to improve airflow and provide panoramic views.
Integrated Electrical System
USB-A and USB-C charging ports
Dual Anderson plugs (roof-mounted and underside options)
National Luna LED lighting with convenient switch control
Lightweight, High-Spec Construction
Despite its size and feature set, the Xplor weighs approximately 82 kg including mattress and ladder (N.B. other brands often exclude ladder and mattress from stated weight). This delivers an outstanding balance of interior space, comfort, and usability without excessive roof load.
